Bill's Birds

I have always been fascinated by birds! Maybe because of their ability to fly or perhaps for their ability to sing and make a joyful noise, either way, I love to watch and photograph them.

Recently I joined a Facebook group called Australian Birds and it has renewed my desire to go out and capture these wonders of nature on film (or should I say “on digital sensor” – doesn’t have the same ring does it!).

Over the past few days I went to a beach in Geraldton at Point Moore to try and capture some images of the various birds there. To my surprise I was excited to find more varieties than I thought I would see...

In particular, I was very pleased to see a bird that I had not seen before and to also capture some close up shots as well. This bird, the Roseate Tern allowed me to approach quite close if I went in low. I must have looked quite a sight as I crawled in “Commando Style” along the sand with camera in hand. To paint the picture for you, as we do in training, I probably looked a lot like a bull seal lumbering along the beach. But nevertheless it worked and I found myself able to capture frame filling shots of these wonderful birds.

Someone said to me recently that getting pictures of birds at their level – that is looking along the ground at their eye level - gives a far more intimate view and enables a greater connection with them. I found this to be true and it also occurred to me that this is how we connect well when training people. If we try and connect on their level and endeavour to involve them in areas that are relevant to them, that they have experience with, then we will find that greater and more intimate connections will happen.

Coming soon to the Certificate IV TAE qualification is a particular unit that is going to become a core unit. At the moment it is an elective but about July this year it will become part of the core units. This unit is TAELLN401A Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills, and it will be one tool that can help us as trainers and assessors to find the appropriate level of the participants we are dealing with in the realm of LLN and therefore be able to approach them at a suitable level for their needs.

Progressive Training will be running this unit as part of a full Certificate IV TAE Course on the following dates 28th April – 2nd May; 5th – 9th May. Speak to Erin at Progressive Training if you are interested in attending the LLN unit that will be run over one day.

Birds are a lot like people! Some are very shy and aloof, some bold and brash, some can sing exquisitely while others make your ears hurt. Many are beautiful with colors to die for while some have an inner beauty that shines through. But all have something to offer and are of great value. Let’s endeavour as trainers and assessors to meet our people on their level and form those connections that will help them to shine.
